Lessons We Learned Promoting At A Spirits Festival

This past weekend we promoted our app at Sydney Spirits Festival, our first ever big event. We really enjoyed the experience (though still recovering our energy!) and gained a lot by being there - genuine interest, important contacts, and many valuable lessons.

Here are a couple of our key takeaways:

  • Craft drink festivals are definitely a good place for us to be.
  • We don't need to catch everyone's interest, just the right people's interest.

Since we weren't serving drinks, we decided to test an interactive game. We handed out 4 x 4 "bingo cards" containing activities participants could complete around the festival. Once they achieved four in a row, they could enter the draw to win our $500 giveaway: dinner for 2 at the Opera House + 1 year of Amber Hour Premium for 2 people. Here's what we learned:

  • The game was a hit among the younger crowd (20s-30s), but 40s+ were blunt in saying it was "too much work". Can't blame 'em, they've been working for years 😜 We'll try again at an event skewed toward a younger crowd.
  • An even simpler 3 x 3 version would be better for holding interest
  • Unfortunately, it attracted a lot of people who weren't interested in our app at all, they just wanted to win the dinner. Those aren't the right people to add to our audience.

We can't know unless we try, right?

Up next for us... Adelaide Gin Festival. Yes, that's right, Amber Hour is heading to South Australia!

Cheers,
